As the novel Coronavirus continues to spread around the world, its impact on regular life seems to intensify every day. Outside of strain on our day-to-day routines, which for many of us, are relegated to the confines of our homes, for the time being, the outbreak’s effects on the business world are also staggering.

It’s difficult these days to think of an industry that hasn’t been shaken, at least in part, by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the hard money sector is certainly no exception. Each year, investors, numismatists and coin enthusiasts look forward to the release of the United States Mint’s annual product schedule. Typically, from January to December, the precious metals sector is abuzz with launch after launch of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium coins ripe for investing.

To this point, the Mint has carried out its 2020 schedule more or less without a hitch. Old favorites like the Silver American Eagle Proof and new designs like the third “Preamble to the Declaration of Independence” Platinum American Eagle Proof were successfully launched in the winter months. Subsequently, mainstays like the 2020 Gold American Eagle Proof carried us seamlessly into spring.

With the onset of the Coronavirus outbreak, however, the Mint’s release lineup for the second half of 2020 appears to be up in the air – at least for the time being. Upon publication of this article, all dates for coin launches past mid-April have been changed on the Mint’s Product Schedule to “TBD.”

Sliding in just under the mid-April cut-off is the 2020 Gold American Buffalo Proof. Initially slated for release in early May, the 2020 Gold Buffalo Proof will now be available from the Mint starting , April 9th, at noon Eastern Time.

In light of the temporary shuttering of two of its locations last month – the San Francisco Mint on the West Coast and briefly, the West Point Mint on the East Coast, which has since resumed operations – the Mint faces the reality that production could continue to be interrupted for the foreseeable future.

While the extent of the pandemic’s disruption to the precious metals sector is still to be seen, as of now, the Gold American Buffalo Proof is the last individual coin with a definitive launch date.

Clients of the United States Gold Bureau will have the opportunity to add one of these investment-grade beauties to their portfolios today. Click here to see the 2020 Gold American Buffalo Proof and learn more below about why this coin could be a great investment choice in these uncertain times.

Why should I invest in the 2020 Gold American Buffalo Proof coin?

Values Have Increased Across all Issues to Date

Outside of currently being the last individual coin with a definite 2020 launch date – which may lead to substantially lower mintage figures than initially expected – the Gold American Buffalo Proof has proven to be a lucrative investment choice since its inception fifteen years ago.

Each of the 14 issues of the Gold American Buffalo Proof to date has enjoyed value increases since their launch years, with some, like the 2006 Gold Buffalo issue and the 2008 4-Coin Set, reaching more than three and five times their original values, respectively. Strong ROI across the entire series has helped the Gold American Buffalo Proof coin not only gain but also maintain its reputation as a reliable store of wealth for investors seeking to hedge against economic turbulence like we’re experiencing now.

Investment Grade Coins are Not Subject to Commodities Market Turbulence

Additionally, Gold American Buffalo Proofs are known as “investment grade” coins and, like all other Proof pieces, are valued for their rarity and quality rather than their weights in gold. As a result, Proof coins are not subject to the typical ups and downs of the commodities market, allowing them to maintain more stable values over time than their bullion counterparts. The Gold American Buffalo Proof is the U.S.’s First 24-Karat Gold Investment Coin

Arguably one of the most defining features of the Gold American Buffalo is its title as the first 24-karat gold coin ever offered for public investment by the U.S. Mint.

The Gold American Buffalo came to fruition as a way for the United States to compete in the global 24-karat gold market which had grown immensely popular with investors around the world. Before the United States introduced its own 99.99% pure gold coin, American investors turned to foreign coins to satisfy their 24-karat gold coin needs. As a result, international favorites like the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf skyrocketed to the top of global markets, leaving the U.S. behind the gold market curve.

Realizing their opportunity to capitalize on the highly in-demand 24-karat gold sector and bring American investment dollars back home, the United States Congress authorized the “Presidential $1 Coin Act” in 2005. On top of producing $1 coins commemorating each of our country's presidents, as its name implies, the Presidential $1 Coin Act also called for the development of the first-ever 24-karat gold coin available for public investment, paving the way for the U.S. to stake a claim in the lucrative nearly-pure gold coin sector.

To this day, the Gold American Buffalo remains one of the purest gold coins in the world.

Gold American Buffalo Proofs Honor U.S. Coinage’s Artistic Legacy

On top of its legacy of breaking new ground for the American precious metals sector, the Gold Buffalo also pays homage to this country’s history of excellent coin artistry. The Gold Buffalo features one of the most iconic coin designs in American history, which undoubtedly adds to the piece's widespread appeal and typically substantial value.

Since its initial release in 2006, the Gold American Buffalo – both bullion and Proof issues – has featured a replica of the 1913 Type I Buffalo Nickel design.

Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo Nickel design was commissioned as part of American leadership’s ongoing effort to “beautify” the country’s coinage in the early part of the 20th century. After a tumultuous start, Fraser’s design was adopted and struck on the circulating U.S. 5¢ coin beginning in 1913. The imagery would be struck on the nickel for another 25 years until its final run in 1938. Read more about this coin’s incredible history.
