Silver American Eagle Proof 70 Coins

The Pride of the U.S. Mint

In Partnership With Ed Moy, Former Director of the U.S. Mint, All Coin Labels are Hand-Signed.

History of the Silver American Eagle

The first Silver American Eagle was released by the United States Mint on November 24, 1986. Each coin is struck from one Troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver. Over the years, the Silver Eagle has been produced at three mint locations: Philadelphia, San Francisco Mint, and West Point.

The obverse of the coin is based on Adolph A. Weinman's 1916 "Walking Liberty" half dollar, which was in circulation from 1916 to 1947, and widely considered one of the most beautiful American coins ever minted. The reverse was designed by John Mercanti and portrays a heraldic eagle grasping an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left. Above the eagle are 13 five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Colonies.

The beauty, elegance and affordability of American Silver Eagle Coins have propelled them to be collected and admired around the world. American Silver Eagle Coins are the world's best-selling silver coins, with more than 130 million of them sold since 1986.

Investment Grade Coins

Certified coins in perfect "Proof 70" condition are considered actual "museum quality." With their beautiful finish, flawless condition and rarity, they are preferred by both collectors and investors. Since they are valued for their rarity, not their weight, they are not subject to the ups and downs of the commodities market, which has made their value more stable over time than silver bullion alone. The U.S. Gold Bureau recommends these coins as a long-term store of value, to help protect your portfolio from turbulent economic times.

The "Walking Liberty" design featured throughout American coin history

New Design for the Silver American Eagle Proof Coin

In 2021, the Silver American Eagle Proof Coin underwent its most significant update in 35 years, seamlessly blending a refreshed reverse design with enhanced obverse details.

The reverse, designed by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, features a dynamic image of an eagle in flight, wings spread wide as it descends with an oak branch in its talons. The design embodies strength, care, and resilience, with inscriptions for weight, purity, face value, and the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The "W" mint mark confirms its production at the West Point Mint. On the obverse, Adolph A. Weinman’s timeless Walking Liberty design was meticulously refined to bring out details true to his original vision. Technological advancements restored elements such as Liberty’s detailed cap, the flowing folds of the flag, and the sharp rays of the rising sun. Weinman’s “AW” signature mark was also added beneath the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST,” further honoring the artistry.

The redesign not only preserves the legacy of the Silver American Eagle but elevates it with modern precision and craftsmanship. New anti-counterfeiting measures, including a reeded edge variation, were introduced to enhance security, ensuring these coins remain as authentic as they are iconic.

Preserving the Past, Saving the Future

Opening in 1854 to serve the gold mines of the California Gold Rush, the San Francisco Mint turned $4 million in gold bullion coins in its first year. The new Mint was opened in 1937 after it quickly outgrew its first building. In 1968, after a 13-year hiatus, it took over most proof coinage production from the Philadelphia Mint, but continued striking a supplemental circulating coinage from 1968 through 1974. All proofs made at the San Francisco Mint carry the "S" mint mark.

Ye Ole Mint, A Rich Legacy

The Coinage Act of 1792, which led to creation of the United States Mint, was entered into law on April 2. At that time, Philadelphia was our nation’s capital, therefore the first mint facility was built there. The Mint Act also instituted a decimal system based on a dollar unit; specified weights, metallic composition and fineness; and required each United States coin feature an impression emblematic of liberty. All proofs made at the Philadelphia Mint carry the "P" mint mark.

The 1995 Silver American Eagle Proof 70 W

The 1995 W Silver American Eagle PF70

The King of the Silver Eagles

The 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle was included as a “complimentary” piece in the special five-coin set honoring the 10th anniversary of the American Eagle bullion coin program. Only 30,125 were produced, and only as part of a larger 5-coin American Eagle set that included 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 ounce Gold Eagles and a 1 ounce Silver Eagle - all West Point and all proofs. The 1 ounce Silver Eagle is actually worth more than the 1 ounce Gold Eagle because of the scarcity of the coin's West Point minting.

The 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle is one of the most unique coins ever minted by the U.S. Mint and with such a low mintage, it remains the most coveted key coin in the U.S. Mint program, valued at well over $20,000.00 with some auctioning over 4 times that amount. This coin is truly in a class of it's own, and a prime example of the importance of investing in proof 70 coins at their earliest release.

Tradition Becomes Our Security

Erected in 1937 as the West Point Bullion Depository, this was originally a storage facility for silver bullion and was nicknamed “The Fort Knox of Silver.” From 1973 to 1986, West Point produced cents, and in 1980 began striking gold medallions. Shortly afterward, approximately 20 billion dollars worth of gold was stored in its vaults, making it second only to Fort Knox for gold storage. All proofs made at West Point carry the "W" mint mark.
