2021 Silver Eagle Proof 70 2-coin Set (Type 1 and Type 2) Description:

The Silver American Eagle coin was the first official silver bullion coin issued by the United States Mint. The silver eagle was first released in 1986 and was authorized by the Liberty Coin Act which was approved the year prior. The Silver American eagle coins are one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver. The face value is $1 as issued by the Mint but is worth far more in pure silver. In addition to the bullion coin, the U.S. Mint also produced a proof version for coin collectors. The Silver Eagle has been produced at three mints over the years: Philadelphia Mint, San Francisco Mint, and the West Point Mint.

Since its initial release in 1986, the reverse of the Silver American Eagle has featured John Mercanti’s image of a heraldic eagle bearing a shield on its chest and clasping an olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left.

In 2021, two versions of the Silver Eagle Proof coins were released by the U.S. Mint - Type 1 which is the last year to feature the original design and a Type 2 which is the first of the brand new reverse design.

The new reverse motif, designed by illustrator and U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program member Emily Damstra, and sculpted by now-retired Mint sculptor-engraver Michael Gaudioso, features a strikingly dynamic image of an American eagle gracefully descending upon what is presumed to be a nest below. The mighty bird clutches an oak branch in its talons, wings outstretched elegantly to either side, and is encircled by the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the coin’s “ONE DOLLAR” face value, and its “1 OZ. FINE SILVER” contents. The motto found on the Seal of the United States, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” – which means, “Out of many, one” – is inscribed on the coin’s surface to the right of the eagle, along with both the designer’s and sculptor’s initials on either side of the bird. The “W” mint mark, indicating production at the West Point Mint in New York state, appears just above the bird’s tail feathers.
