The effects of Coronavirus and the COVID-19 Pandemic have been widespread in U.S. Mint operations, upsetting production of the 2020 Silver American Eagle coin so much so that it was temporarily halted before being moved to the Philadelphia Mint for emergency minting capacity. See the official statement from the U.S. Mint on the Philadelphia minted Silver American Eagle – View the Statement.
Production was moved as two other U.S. Mint facilities, West Point and San Francisco, were shuddered due to concerns about the virus. A total of only 240,000 coins were produced at the Philadelphia Mint before normal minting resumed elsewhere. This extremely low mintage makes the 2020 Silver Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint one of the rarest bullion silver dollars ever issued by the U.S. Mint.
The coins do not feature a mint mark on their face, but are identified by the boxes they were packed in prior to leaving the facility. This unusual occurrence has created an instant rarity seldom seen in the coin investing community. The 2020 Silver American Eagle is available here at the United States Gold Bureau while inventory lasts in perfect MS70.
*Coins will either come in the green slab with the Philadelphia Liberty Bell label or the White/Blue Early Release label in the clear slab.
