History of the Coin: The Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 permitted the production of the Gold American Eagle coin beginning in 1986. The weight and purity of each coin is guaranteed by the United States government.
In the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 it stipulates that the gold used in the production of the Gold American Eagle must come from the United States and that the gold must be alloyed with silver and copper to create a more durable, wear-resistant coin. The resulting Gold American Eagle coin is a tribute to our great country and offers investors the opportunity to buy American gold!
The Lady Liberty design on the obverse of the Gold American Eagle coin is based largely on Augustus Saint-Gaudens original interpretation. President Theodore Roosevelt selected Saint-Gaudens to redesign American coinage. His first effort was a beautifully designed high-relief $20 coin depicting Lady Liberty that was first minted in 1907.
In the current design Lady Liberty strides forward with her right foot in front of her left, holding a torch in her right hand, an olive branch in her left, and her long hair brilliantly flowing to the right.
The reverse of the coin is the work of sculptor Miley Busiek. A male bald eagle returns to the nest he shares with a female bald eagle and their young eaglet. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is directly above the male eagle with IN GOD WE TRUST to the right of the nest.
