The first Palladium American Eagle coin was released in 2017 and was only minted in the bullion version. In 2018, the U.S. Mint released the first ever proof version, which sold out in under 10 minutes. In 2019, the U.S. Mint released another first with a maximum mintage limit of 30,000, the 2019 Palladium American Eagle Proof will be the first palladium coin from the U.S. Mint to ever feature a High Relief Reverse Proof finish.
The coins feature the familiar Winged Liberty Head design that was used on the circulating dime from 1916 to 1945. The design reminded many of the Greek god Mercury, which gave rise to the nickname “Mercury Dime.” Each coin contains 1 Troy ounce of .9995 pure palladium and has the highly unusual $25 face value, plus a W mint mark, denoting it a product of the U.S. Mint at West Point.
