The America the Beautiful Silver bullion coins are a series that duplicate the America the Beautiful Quarters that were issued by the United States Mint in 2010 and are set to continue until 2021. This program is authorized by the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008.
The obverse of each coin depicts a restored version of the original portrait of George Washington used for the 1932 Washington quarter and designed by John Flanagan. This side is also engraved with 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA','LIBERTY','IN GOD WE TRUST' and 'QUARTER DOLLAR.'
Each year will see the release of five new reverse designs that depict a different national park, national site or historical monument from every state, federal district, and territory. Unlike the America the Beautiful quarters, the bullion coins have a reeded edge and are inscribed with the coin's specifications '.999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE'.
It was President Theodore Roosevelt who established the National Park system in the U.S. and proclaimed that there would be 18 national parks by the end of his term. Later Presidents deemed this the Antiquities Act which created more than 100 national parks and monuments, 49 of which remain today and stand as the inspiration for this America the Beautiful coin collection. It is precisely this reason why Roosevelt is one of the four faces seen on Mount Rushmore.

When the U.S. Constitution created a new government for their Republic, they realized the need for a monetary system that would be respected. Soon after, Secretary of the Treasurer Alexander Hamilton prepared plans for a mint, and in 1792 Congress passed the Coinage Act, and the Mint building was authorized in the capitol, Philadelphia. The U.S. Mint was the first federal building erected under the Constitution and President George Washington appointed the leading American scientist David Rittenhouse as the first director.
At first, the mint only produced copper cents, but it was not long until gold and silver coins began to be issued. It is even believed that President Washington donated some of his own silver to be used for minting. The Mint has played a vital part in the diplomatic history of the U.S. as in 1801, large silver peace medals were produced to be presented to American Indian chiefs and warriors to establish peace and friendship.
The Silver America the Beautiful coins are a great option for those looking to begin their coin collection.
