The first Silver American Eagle coins were minted by the U.S. Mint in 1986, after receiving authorization through the Liberty Coin Act in 1985. The Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. Struck in 1 oz and .999 pure silver, this is one of the most popular silver coins in the world.
From 1986-2021, the Silver Eagle featured the same design. In the middle of 2021, the U.S. Mint released a new Type 2 version with a new reverse designed by Emily Damstra which is now the reverse design moving forward. The new design for the Silver Eagle captures an eagle coming for a landing with an impressive wingspan on full display. Clutched in its claws is a branch from an oak tree. The phrases "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed on the coin.
The obverse of the coin features one of the most popular designs in the history of American coinage, the Walking Liberty by Adolph A. Weinman. The design originally appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947. In addition to the Walking Liberty's classic design, the obverse features the year of issuance, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
