2017 Silver Eagle S Proof 70 - Limited Edition

The American Silver Eagle is a part of the official minting of silver bullion of the United States. This example of the 1 oz Silver American Eagle is sold in a proof 70 condition and hand signed by Ed Moy, the 38th director of the United States Mint. The very first Silver Eagle was struck in San Francisco in 1986, and after a stint at the West Point mint, the 2017 version, some 30 years later, is struck in San Francisco again with an exclusive proof minting.

The Design of the 2017 Silver Eagle S Proof 70

The two sides of this coin are actually taken from two different artists. The reverse of the coin was designed by John Mercanti and features a relatively familiar image. You can see a heraldic eagle, wings outstretched. In its talons, it holds an olive branch in one set and a bundle of arrows in the other. This is supposed to represent America's love of peace but at the same time our willingness to go to war if deemed necessary. On this side, the S mint mark designates the coin was minted in the San Francisco. The San Francisco mint exclusively strikes the proof versions of currency for the United States.

The obverse of the coin features a much older design. Adolph A. Weinman first created the Walking Liberty design in 1916. Back then it appeared on a half-dollar coin. This coin was in production for over 30 years, and the design itself was very popular among the public. It's no wonder why this iconic design was brought back for the Silver Eagle coin.
