Add a treasured 2010 $10 Abigail Fillmore First Spouse MS70 to your collection today. The U.S. Mint began honoring the first spouses of the United States in 2007, the first time they had ever been commemorated in coinage. Coins in the series have been released annually, in the order that the first ladies served, their release coinciding with that of the annual presidential coins. This prestigious series of coins represents the first time that the U.S. Mint has produced a commemorative coin in half an ounce of .999 fine gold.
The obverse design by Phebe Hemphill shows a delightful portrait of Abigail Fillmore, her hair curled, wearing a contemporaneous headdress and clothing. Abigail's name curves around the top of the design in capital letters, to the left of the portrait the wording "In GOD WE TRUST" is seen, to the right of her portrait, the word "LIBERTY" and the year of issue 2010. Underneath the presidential order (13th) and the years she served as the First Spouse are inscribed, in this case, 1850-1853.
The reverse of the coin was designed by Susan Gamble and seeks to show a key aspect of the subject's work when serving as the First Spouse. In the case of Abigail Fillmore, her impact is clear, for before she was First Lady, there was no library at the White House. So Abigail is shown shelving books in the library she founded. Above the scene, the wording "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed and below the wording "E. PLURIBUS UNUM," the face value of $10, ½ oz and .999 FINE GOLD. The scene is shown in exquisite detail, as carving on the wooden shelves, individual books and the folds on Abigail's clothing can be made out. It is quite a feat to show such movement and detail in a coin.
Abigail Fillmore trained as a teacher and put great store on books and education, and so it seems fitting that she is shown in this context, building a library that was to provide a lasting legacy at the White House. The designs for the coin were sculpted by Phebe Hemphill (obverse side) and Joseph Menna (reverse side) respectively.
