1805 $2.50 Capped Bust (Right) Quarter Eagle MS61

The 1805 $2.50 Capped Bust (Right) Quarter Eagle is one of the earliest gold coins produced by the United States Mint. Designed by Robert Scot, the Capped Bust Right Quarter Eagle was struck from 1796 through 1807 and represents an important chapter in early American numismatics.

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 91.67% gold, the coin weighs 4.37 grams and contains approximately 0.1298 troy ounces of pure gold. Production of the 1805 issue totaled just 1,781 coins, and surviving Mint State examples are exceptionally scarce today.

Certified MS61 by NGC, this coin retains original Mint State detail while exhibiting the character expected of an early 19th-century gold issue. With an NGC population of only 8, it is a seldom-seen example of this historic type.

The obverse features Liberty facing right, wearing a soft cap with flowing hair, while the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, holding an olive branch and arrows beneath the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. As one of the earliest quarter eagles issued by the United States Mint, the 1805 Capped Bust (Right) Quarter Eagle reflects the artistry and craftsmanship of America's first generation of coinage.
