Description:

In 1997, the U.S. Mint made numismatic history by issuing the first Platinum American Eagle Proof coin . The Platinum American Eagle is unique among American coinage because the design of the proof coin differs from the bullion coin. Authorized by Congress in 1996, the release of the 1997 Platinum American Eagle was the first platinum legal tender coin. The Platinum American Eagles hold a face value of $100.

The Platinum American Eagle Proof coin has become a favorite of American patriots. Every year, the design changes to reflect American greatness. Throughout the years, the Platinum American Eagle Proof coin honored noble American ideals like the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the foundations of democracy. The 2023 Platinum American Eagle Proof coin is the third coin in a five-year series honoring the 1st Amendment. The Founding Fathers would only ratify the Constitution with guarantees of individual liberties. The Constitution's First Amendment is the philosophical bedrock and starting point of American Liberty expressed in the Constitution. The First Amendment to the Constitution Platinum Proof Coin Series is more than coins. They represent a timeless reminder of everything great about America herself.

The First Amendment series relies on the oak tree image, a famous American motif, to commemorate the First Amendment. The U.S. Mint stated that the oak tree would grow over the series’ five-year duration. The growth demonstrates how "liberty grows to a thing of strength and beauty from a seed – our Bill of Rights" and that "each of the freedoms enumerated in the First Amendment contributes to the growth and development of the Nation.” Each of the five designs will depict a sequential stage of the oak tree’s lifecycle, “from seedling to a mighty oak,” a progression that acts as a “metaphor for our country’s growth as a Nation that values freedom.” Each year contains a phrase expressing the benefits of that growth. The 2023 Proof coin features acorns and says, "With Freedom of the Press, Liberty Bears Fruit." Like an acorn becoming another oak tree, a free press is a seed to grow liberty beyond our shores.
