The 1996 $5 Smithsonian gold commemorative coin was issed by the U.S. Mint to honor the 150th Anniversary of the establishment of the Smithsonian.
Featured on the obverse of the coin is the left facing portrait of James Smithson designed by Alfred Maletsky. The inscriptions include "FOR THE INCREASE AND DIFFUSION OF KNOWLEDGE," "IN GOD WE TRUST," the anniversary dates "1846-1996," "JAMES SMITHSON," and "LIBERTY."
The reverse, designed by James T. Ferrell, depicts the Smithsonian's sunburst logo with "SMITHSONIAN" curved beneath it. The image is framed by a border containing the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "FIVE DOLLARS."
