The Gold Quarter Eagle was created in 1848 with 230 ounces of gold that was sent to the Mint by the Secretary of War. These coins feature a distinguishing mark CAL. above the eagle on the reverse side. A modified reverse design was used on the Philadelphia quarter eagles from 1859-1907.
