Features of the 1888 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle NGC PF66 Cameo:
Here is a rare treasure from the famed Ed Trompeter collection. NGC has graded two as PF66 Cameo with only two finer. Small amounts of proof half eagles were produced by the Philadelphia Mint over the years, and the 95 examples struck in 1888 were the most minted in a single year until 1896.
In an auction listing of late 2020, Heritage reports, “It seems unlikely that much more than half that total was actually distributed, as experts estimate no more than 35 to 45 examples survive today in all grades.” However, PCGS tells us that 50-60 exist today. Collectors Universe gives it a price of $72,500. NGC shows a price of $55,000.
