Roosevelt felt strongly that at least one coin should feature an Indian headdress and so Saint-Gaudens came up with a design in which Liberty is adorned with such a headdress, shown here on the obverse side. Above the left-facing portrait are 13 stars symbolic of the original states of the union, while below is the year of issue. These Indian Gold Eagles were produced every year between 1907 and 1916, and then intermittently until 1933. Your coin will be from a random and common year of issue.

The reverse design features a left-facing bald eagle standing on arrows and an olive branch, representing that America is a peace loving country but one prepared to defend itself. Curving around the top of the design is the country of issue: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. To the right of the eagle is the phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM, taken from the great seal of the United States, meaning "Out of many, one."

The origins of this motto can be traced right back to Greek philosopher Heraclitus, who coined the phrase "The one is made up of all things, and all things issue from the one." A variation of this phrase was later used by London-based publisher Peter Anthony Monteux, on his monthly magazine The Gentleman's Journal and it was subsequently recommended by Pierre Eugene du Simitiere in 1776 for use on the great seal. Below the standing eagle, we see the face value of TEN DOLLARS.

The motto IN GOD WE TRUST, shown to the left of the eagle, was not added to the coin until 1908. It has been speculated that Roosevelt felt that evoking God's name on coinage was blasphemous. However, following public outrage, Congress passed a bill which meant the inclusion of the motto was mandatory. The design of this Gold Eagle is completed with raised stars around the edge of the coin.

At the time of striking, these coins had a weight of 16.7200 grams and a diameter of 27 millimeters. Made of .9 fine gold they are composed of 90 percent gold and 10 percent copper.
