Issued between 1916 and 1947, the Walking Liberty half dollar had a value of 50 cents and is so-called for its design by Adolph A. Weinman. This shows, on the obverse, Lady Liberty striding while holding branches, while displayed on the reverse is a bald eagle perched on a mountaintop.

While Weinman's design has been preserved in modified form for the Silver American Eagle's obverse since 1986, the Walking Liberty half dollar has remained one of American history's most beautiful and collectible silver coins. Today, you can - as permitted by availability - purchase a paper and plastic roll containing 20 90% silver Walking Liberty half dollar coins.

The Walking Liberty design originally replaced the Barber half dollar design, which was minted from 1892 until 1915 and, in that time, was not always universally acclaimed. In 1915, Robert W. Woolley took over the United States Mint and called for the current designs of silver coins to be replaced as soon as was legally possible. Weinman, a German-born sculptor, was one of the designers suggested for work on the new coins.

While the new half dollar was introduced to little publicity, it was soon reported that mints tasked with producing the coin were struggling to keep up with public demand for it. Indeed, while Weinman's design was hard to mint perfectly, the late art historian Cornelius Vermeule deemed it among the most beautiful to have ever featured on a US coin.

Coins are considered "junk silver" if they were struck before 1965 and their silver content reaches 90%. Today, these coins' value arises from the precious metal content's bullion value, not the coin's collectability. From 1965, silver coins struck in the United States consisted of less silver and more nickel and copper, while the Walking Liberty was removed from circulation.

Therefore, the public started saving silver coins such as the Walking Liberty to fiscally insure themselves against economic adversity. Today, purchasing a roll of junk silver Walking Liberty half dollars can be great as part of a long-term drive for investment in precious metals.

We do not guarantee which dates will appear on the Walking Liberty coins that you purchase, as these dates will depend on what stock is available when you place your order. In any case, however, your coins could become useful as a rainy day fund to turn to when this is deemed necessary.

They can be a particularly good starting point for putting together a precious metals portfolio. And, even before you add further to that portfolio, the 20 Walking Liberty silver coins you will get in a single roll could help in emergencies and be put towards bartering for items such as food and fuel.

A wide range of silver bags and rolls and gold and silver bullion can, as far as availability allows, be purchased from our stock here at the United States Gold Bureau. We invite you to call (800) 775-3504 to ask a precious metals specialist more about how these investments can help you financially.
