The kangaroo is globally recognized as one of Australia's most iconic symbols, which has made it an obvious choice of emblem for featuring on Australian currency. Its beloved form is prominent on the 1oz Silver Kangaroo silver bullion coin which, availability permitting, you can buy from our stock.

The world's largest marsupial, the red kangaroo, is joined in Australia and New Guinea by the other kinds of kangaroo including the western grey, eastern grey and antilopine. While the kangaroo is capable of jumping three times as much as its height, it is unable to walk backwards.

In that respect, the kangaroo could be considered especially reflective of how Australia would probably like to see itself: punching above its weight and never going backwards. Indeed, a kangaroo features as one of the bearers of the Australian Coat of Arms, while red kangaroos appear as bearers of the Coat of Arms of Western Australia. Kangaroos have also long featured on coinage...

Australia's pre-decimal penny and half-penny coins each depicted a kangaroo, while five kangaroos appear on the country's one dollar coin. In 1993, the Perth Mint - one of only two mints issuing Australian legal tender coins today - introduced the Silver Kangaroo as a proof coin.

There are several factors that have added to the rarity - and, as a result, collectible value - of the Silver Kangaroo over the years. Not only does the Perth Mint annually produce the coin in restricted mintages, it also changes the kangaroo's specific design from year to year. More recently, the coin has also started receiving a brilliant high-relief proof version.

1 Troy ounce of .9999 fine silver is in each Silver Kangaroo coin, which remains legal tender in its home country and comes with a $1 AUD face value that has been issued to it by the Australian government. The Silver Kangaroo is the most pure silver bullion coin ever made for use as Australian legal tender, all while keeping the same face value as other $1 silver bullion coins.

While the kangaroo design regularly changes, various other aspects of the design remain consistent. For example, the reverse always shows the engraved words "Australian Kangaroo", while statistics including the coin's purity, weight, metal content and year of minting also appear on this side.

Flip over to the Silver Kangaroo's obverse side and you will see Elizabeth II, best-known as Queen of the United Kingdom but also Australia's constitutional monarch, shown in right-profile. This image is the work of artist Ian Rank-Broadley and is an immediately recognizable aspect of most coins struck by the UK's Royal Mint, the Perth Mint and Royal Australia Mint, and Auckland's New Zealand Mint.

Her Majesty's likeness is, on the Silver Kangaroo, displayed alongside engravings reading "Elizabeth II" and "Australia". The coin's face value also appears here as "1 Dollar". On the high-relief proof coins, there are even concave faces and a 38mm-deep surface giving the look of a 3D finish.

The Silver Kangaroo, like other silver coins, enables you to bolster your silver stack with greater amounts of silver that you could also find surprisingly affordable.
