The South African Mint continues its tradition of celebrating the iconic "Big Five" animals with the release of the Big Five II Series. This series, dedicated to South Africa's remarkable wildlife, consists of five coins, each honoring the nation's cultural and natural heritage through the emblematic Elephant, Lion, Buffalo, Rhino, and Leopard.

In this collection, the fifth coin pays tribute to the majestic Buffalo. The 1 oz gold coin features a finely detailed close-up of an adult buffalo's head. The design includes inscriptions of "SOUTH AFRICA," "BIG FIVE 2023," and the South African coat of arms. On the reverse side, two halves of a buffalo's head are depicted. Placing two of these coins side by side forms a complete close-up portrait of a buffalo, and when multiple coins are aligned, an entire buffalo herd comes to life. The center of the coin displays the denomination "FIFTY RAND," weight "1OZ," and fineness "Au 999.9."

The Cape or African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is known for its herbivorous nature, living in herds ranging from a few dozen to hundreds of individuals. These animals thrive in swampy areas and shaded grasslands near water sources. Their most distinctive feature is their massive, curved horns, which can span up to 1.50 meters. The Big Five II Buffalo 1 oz gold proof coin is an exclusive limited edition of just 500 pieces worldwide.
