The $1 Silver American Eagle Coin is made of 1 Troy oz of .999 fine silver. This coin is the official silver bullion of the United States, and as such its quality is guaranteed. In fact, the American Eagle Coin is the only official investment-quality 1oz silver bullion coin minted in the United States and represents a good opportunity for those wanting to take their first step on the investment ladder.
The obverse of the coin features a representation of the image of liberty walking towards a rising sun by Adolph A. Weinman, originally used on the half dollar struck between 1916 and 1947, the words "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" also featured on the design.
The reverse of the type 1 coin was designed by John Mercanti, 12th chief engraver at the U.S. Mint, features a spread-winged eagle, with 13 stars representing the 13 original colonies, along with the wording "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER,“ "ONE DOLLAR" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
The reverse of the type 2 features a dynamic American eagle that appears to be coming in for a landing while carrying an oak branch, presumably to add to its family’s nest below. The bird is depicted in strikingly nuanced detail, adding to this new design's impact on the viewer. The image includes the typical reverse-side inscriptions for the Silver Eagle, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” lining the left edge of the coin and the coin’s “ONE DOLLAR” face value and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER” contents lining the right. The motto found of the Great Seal of the United States – “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” which means, “Out of many, one” – lines the inner right edge of the coin, while the “S” mint mark, indicating production at the San Francisco Mint, the designer’s initials, “ESD,” and the sculptor’s initials, “MG,” form triangular points around the bottom half of the eagle.
*With the release of the 2021 type 2 version of the Silver American Eagle, designed by Emily Damstra, you may receive a reverse design type 1 (John Mercanti) or type 2 (Emily Damstra) design based on our current inventory.*
What does "Date Varies" mean? Orders placed for products that are not a specific year will be fulfilled with coins of any date, based on availability, including back-dated or current year of issue. Orders of multiple coins may be filled with the same year or a variety of years.
The production of the Silver Eagle coins was instigated by a desire to sell off silver from the National Defense Stockpile through the issuance of silver coins, though this plan faced opposition at first; the first coins were issued in 1986.
Produced by the U.S. Mint, established in 1792 and operating at six facilities around the United States, the Silver Eagle has been produced at three mints: the Philadelphia Mint, the San Francisco Mint, and the West Point Mint. The $1 Silver American Eagle Coin is the purest silver dollar ever struck by the mint; and over thirty years since first being issued, the Silver American Eagle shows no sign of its popularity waning. In fact, past runs of the coin (in 2014 and 2015) have proven so popular they've run out - so invest in them today, while you still can.
