The 1 oz gold coin serves as the centerpiece of the Austrian Philharmonic Series. Along with the 1/4 oz gold coin that was also released in 1989, it is one of the two alternatives in the series that has been around the longest. One of the gold coins that sells the most worldwide for a long time is the 1 oz Gold Philharmonic.

The Vienna Philharmonic bullion coin, one of the most well-known and frequently exchanged gold coins worldwide, is made by the Austrian Mint. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is shown on the coin, which has come to represent Austria's superiority and rich cultural history.

The initiative began in 1989 when 1/4 oz and 1 oz gold coins were introduced. A 1/10 oz gold coin and a 1/2 oz gold coin were added to the series in 1991 and 1994, respectively. In the 2000s, there was even more growth with the introduction of the 1 oz silver coin in 2008, the 1/25 oz gold coin in 2014, and platinum coins beginning in 2016.

The Great Pipe Organ, a beloved image, is featured on the obverse of the 2024 1 oz Gold Philharmonic Coin. Created by Chief Engraver Thomas Pesendorfer of the Austrian Mint, this image provides a view of the pipe organ located in the Golden Concert Hall of the Musikverein.

The 2024 Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins have an image of musical instruments on the reverse side. This group of instruments features two violins on either side of the cello in the foreground. French horn, harp, and bassoon are heard in the background.
