The South African Krugerrand coin, which contributed to the rise in popularity of private gold ownership in the 20th century, is the oldest series of gold bullion coins in the world. Originally released in 1967, the coins have been a staple of the contemporary precious metals market ever since. They even withstood a boycott by Western countries in the 1990s.
The Krugerrand bullion currency bears the name of Paul Kruger, a significant Boer leader from South Africa who lived in the 1800s. As a political and military figure in the Transvaal region, Kruger gained notoriety (also known as the South African Republic). He was crucial to the 19th-century creation and defense of the Transvaal's independence against British intrusions.
The image of Kruger can be found on the obverse of 2024 South African Gold Krugerrands. At first, he was a member of the Trimuverate, which was in charge of the South African Republic, a self-governing Boer state. The first version of this Kruger bust was made in the 1890s for South African Pound gold coins.
The Springbok antelope is shown on the reverse side of the 2024 1 oz Gold Krugerrand Coins. The official symbol of the current Republic of South Africa, the Springbok is a native species of Africa, found mostly in the southern part of the continent.
