United States Gold Bureau Coin Recommendation of Platinum American Eagle Coin
Platinum American Eagles

Authorized by Congress in 1996 and released in 1997, The Platinum American Eagle has quickly become one of the world's premier Platinum coins.

The Modern Commodity

The number and scope of platinum's industrial uses have skyrocketed during this century to include neurosurgical and dental apparatus, drugs for cancer treatment, computer and automotive equipment. Indeed, one of every five goods manufactured either contains or is produced using platinum. One of its most essential uses is in auto catalytic converters. Within auto catalysts, platinum converts harmful emissions into carbon dioxide and water. Nearly one third of newly mined platinum is used in this fashion.

It can also be used as a catalyst during the process of breaking up petroleum products. Another example of how platinum can be used as a catalyst is in fuel cells and in antipollution devices for automobiles.

Industrial Platinum Demand by Application

United States Gold Bureau Platinum Pie Chart

Platinum, together with palladium and rhodium, are the primary elements in auto catalysts that control vehicle exhaust emissions of hydro-carbons, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and particulate. Auto catalysts convert most of these emissions into less harmful carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapor. Auto catalyst demand was forecast to account for almost 51% of total platinum demand in 2006 (up from 25% in 2000).

Due to the recent troubles with the Big 3 American Auto Manufacturers, platinum has seen a sharp drop in its price from a high of $2,400.00 per ounce down to the $1,000.00 range. Here at The US Gold Bureau, we feel that now is a great time to take advantage of this market. We know the auto manufacturing industry will get back on its feet and produce more cars in the future. Additionally, the new fuel cell technologies will require MORE PLATINUM than the current auto catalytic converters.

Because platinum is designated as an industrial metal, and not a metal used to back currency, Platinum American Eagles are less likely to be considered if confiscation issues arise in the future.

Platinum is 10 times more rare than gold. The mintage volumes of Platinum American Eagles from the United States Government are less than 10,000 per year, with some years being less than 3,000. These low production numbers put Platinum American Eagles in a position to become the first modern day issued coin to reach the $1,000,000 mark as a rare coin.

About the coins

In 2000, U.S. Mint Engraver Al Maletsky sculpted his second successive reverse design of the third “Vistas of Liberty” Platinum Proof coin. This marked the first time the same artist’s design had been used two years in a row on the changing reverses. This makes the 1999 and 2000 Platinum Proofs uniquely compatible companions. Maletsky would repeat his two in a row turn in 2002-2003. Upon first inspection, Maletsky’s Year 2000 reverse design does not appear as compelling as his “Wetlands” coin from the year before. However, a closer examination reveals a finely crafted scene with perfectly calculated aspect ratios depicting a wide, rolling landscape in seemingly perfect dimension. The design, entitled “Eagle Above America’s Heartland,” features the omnipresent Bald Eagle flying full reveal in the upper foreground above the crop fields of a solitary farm house with a large barn and granary silo. The entire scene stretches across gently rolling hills into a sun laced horizon.

The legend “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” repeats its presentation from the year before, arced at the top rim in a single line of text. However, for the first time in the series, the fineness designation “.9995 Platinum” and the coin’s guaranteed platinum weight appear just below the coin’s legal tender denomination at the bottom center hovering over the crop field. The “W” mint mark designating the West Point Mint as the producer is cleanly located near the left outer rim about nine o’clock just above the horizon line.

Original Total Mintage Summary:

Including all four denominations, there was a total of 51,148 Platinum Eagle Proofs produced and sold in 2000. By 2000, a clear trend of diminishing total mintages was beginning to emerge. This is a trend that would, with one exception, continue to the end of the first decade. As in the previous year, the $50 Proof coin is the rarest with only 11,049 coins produced. By total mintage, the 2000 Platinum Eagle Proofs are the sixth rarest in the series.

NGC Certified Population Summary:

Additionally, as of June 2011, a total of only 381 four coin Platinum Eagle Proof sets from 2000 had been certified by NGC in Proof 70 condition.
