Augustus Saint Gaudens had a significant impact on American coinage during the early part of the Twentieth Century. Not only were coins he designed, such as the Double Eagle, highly cherished by collectors and admired by others, but students of his created such beautiful and interesting coins as the $2.50 “INCUSE” Indian Head. However, his influence didn’t stop there, as evidenced by the Silver American Buffalo coin.
The Silver American Buffalo Round is based off a design of James Earle Fraser, a student of Saint Gaudens. The Fraser design was originally used as the design for the nickel that was minted between 1913 and 1938. It featured an American Indian head on the obverse, modeled by three different American Indians: Chief Iron Tail, Chief Big Tree and Chief Two Moons. The reverse featured a buffalo modeled off one that was housed in New York City’s Central Park Zoo.
The Silver American Buffalo Rounds contains one ounce of .999 fine silver, with a diameter of 37 millimeters. With the wonderful Fraser design, this is a beautiful coin that goes great in any collection. Contact us today to inquire about our inventory and prices.
