The French Rooster gold coins were minted between 1899 and 1914 and contain .1867 oz of gold, making them a size between a U.S. dime and nickel. Celebrates France’s "Third Republic," which came to power after Napoleon’s fall in the Franco-Prussian War.
The reverse of the coin features a hearty Gallic Rooster (a "Coq Gaulois"), one of France’s most revered national symbols, which gives the coin its name. It also has the words Liberty, Egalite and Fraternite, meaning Freedom, Equality and Fraternity.
