Elizabeth Taylor jewelry auction features many gold pieces

Elizabeth Taylor has been idolized for decades for her stunning beauty and glamorous lifestyle. The actress was part of Hollywood's Golden Age, but that was not the only golden aspect of her life. The world was saddened by the news of her death in March of 2011, and the magnitude of her popularity was recently showcased when her precious jewelry auctioned for staggering prices.

For instance, a necklace made out of ivory and gold was estimated to sell for $1,500, however, because it was Taylor's, the necklace sold at auction for $260,000, according to CNN.

The auction was held at Christie's in New York City last year from December 3 to December 10, and featured a dazzling array of gold, jewels and pearls. The UK Telegraph says that this was the collection's final stop as it toured around the world, including locations like Moscow, London, Dubai, Geneva, Paris, Hong Kong and Los Angeles.

Elizabeth Taylor was well known for her statement earrings and necklaces, many of which were featured in the collection. Some of the most talked about pieces included gold and diamond chandelier earrings, pearl and gold butterfly earrings, and a diamond and gold lion choker necklace.

An online auction at the Christie's website ran from December 3 to 17, concluding the sale. Some of the most exquisite items sold during the online auction were the gold, sapphire and Mississippi pearl hummingbird brooch, a pair of 18-karat white gold and diamond hoop earrings and a hexagonal-shaped gold and coral cuff.

CNN reported that a portion of the profits made at the auction went toward the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which was founded by the actress in 1991.
