The only official silver bullion coin minted by the United States, the American Silver Eagle was first minted in 1986. The coin is 99.9% pure silver, has a weight of one troy ounce, and has a nominal face value of only a dollar. Because of its purity the American Silver Eagle is one of the coins which can be used as part of a Precious Metal IRA.
The American Silver Eagle was originally intended to be produced as a way to deplete the stockpile of silver held by the United States. However, the program proved so popular that when the stockpile came close to depletion in 2002, the American Silver Eagle program was extended by an act of Congress.
Based on the famous nickel design by James Earle Fraser, the Silver Buffalo Rounds feature an American Indian portrait on the obverse and an American Buffalo on the reverse. First minted in 1988, the Silver Maple Leafs are among the most recognizable silver bullion coins in the world. These coins contain one troy ounce of .9999 fine silver, making them among the purest of all silver dollar-sized coins in circulation. It has a nominal face value of $5 and, despite its purity, is often priced less than bullion coins such as the American Silver Eagles, Australian Lunar coins, or the Chinese Pandas.
The Silver Maple Leaf is known around the world for its beautiful and intricate design. The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse features the maple leaf. A symbol of Canada, this gives the coin its name, as well.
