2010 $50 Gold Buffalo Coin

2010 Gold American Buffalo

About the coin: The 2010 Gold American Buffalo was released on April 29, 2010 and is available only in the one-ounce size. The Mint has offered the one ounce 24 karat Gold American Buffalo bullion coin each year since 2006. In late 2008, the Mint began to experience problems keeping up with the demand for this and other bullion coin offerings.

In response, the U.S. Mint decided to focus production on one ounce 22 karat Gold American Eagle bullion coins and temporarily suspended 24 karat Gold American Buffalo coins. The coin's design is taken from the Buffalo Nickel that James Earle Fraser designed and was in circulation from 1916 to 1937. The front (obverse) has a Native American portrait and the reverse has an American Bison, which gives the coin its name.

NGC Certified Population Summary:

As of June 2011, a total of only 2,893 Gold American Buffalo Proofs from 2010 had been certified by NGC in Proof 70 condition.
