As a group, with a total of 124,251 total Proof coins minted, the 2002 Gold Eagle Proofs rank as the 7th rarest overall by total mintage from 1988-2005. For the second year in a row, three denominations posted Proof mintage totals of less than 30,000 with the $25 Gold Eagle Proofs posting the lowest total at 26,646 Proof coins minted. Still, this earned the 2002 $25 Gold Eagle Proofs only the 5th overall rarity ranking by a total mintage among all $25 Gold Eagle Proofs. Both the $10 and $50 Gold Eagle Proofs were more rare coming in at 4th and 5th respectively within their denomination groups.
Additionally, through June 26, 2009, a total of only 513 four coin Gold Eagle Proofs sets from 2002 had been certified by NGC in Proof 70 condition.
