In 2001, for only the 4th time overall, there were at least three Proof coin denominations that saw total mintages of less than 26,000 each. The last time was in 1998 and that class was fairly distinguished in terms of overall rarity. The Class of 2001 has several things to distinguish itself. Still, as a group, with a total of 111,018 Gold Eagle Proofs minted, the Class of 2001 ranks as the 5th rarest overall on all issues between 1988-2005. Within the group, the $10 Gold Eagle Proofs rank 3rd respectively as the rarest by total mintage within it's denominations.
Additionally, through June 26, 2009, a total of only 401 four coin Gold Eagle Proofs sets from 2001 had been certified by NGC in Proof 70 condition.
