Through the end of 2005, the 2000 Gold Eagle Proofs were the last group to exceed 46,000 in total Proof coins minted in a single denomination. With a total of 151,036 Proof coins minted, the 2000 Gold Eagle Proofs rank just below the 1999 class as the 11th rarest overall by total mintage. The truly distinguishing characteristic of the Class of 2000 is that they are the first Gold Eagle Proofs of the 21st century, which will always make them desirable among collectors. In terms of total mintage the Class of 2000 was almost a carbon copy of the Class of 1999 with individual mintage totals being almost identical.
Additionally, through June 26, 2009, a total of only 424 four coin Gold Eagle Proofs sets from 2000 had been certified by NGC in Proof 70 condition.
