About the coins
The 1997 Platinum Eagle Proofs are unique among the Platinum Eagle Proof coins produced from 1997-2006. Besides being the very first platinum Eagle Proofs in United States history, they are the only ones minted in the first decade where the reverse design of the proof coins is the same as the reverse on the circulated bullion version.
The reverse of the 1997 Platinum Eagles was designed by former U.S. Mint Sculptor, Thomas D. Rogers, Sr., who also designed many other coins during his tenure, including the reverse for the Sacagawea Gold Dollar and the Massachusetts, Maryland and South Carolina state quarters, as well as the reverse for the 2001 Platinum Eagle Proof coins. Rogers’ classic ’97 reverse design has been used on the circulated Platinum Eagles every year they have been minted.
Rogers reverse design features an Eagle with a full extended wing span flying west with the gleaming rays of the rising sun breaking over the Earth’s horizon behind him. The legend “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” adorns the top field with the fineness designation “.9995 Platinum” and the coin’s government guaranteed platinum weight in about the three o’clock position. The coin’s legal tender denomination is at the bottom center in the Earth’s horizon field. The “W” mark designating the West Point Mint as the producer is located at about nine o’clock between two ray fingers of the sun.
Original Total Mintage Summary:
Being the first year issue of the series, more Platinum Eagle Proofs were minted in 1997 than any other mint year. Including all four denominations, there was a total of 91,903 Platinum Eagle Proofs produced and sold in 1997. This total makes the 1997 Platinum Eagle Proofs the most populous and least rare coins in the entire first decade of production.
NGC Certified Population Summary:
Additionally, through June 26, 2009, a total of only 240 four coin Platinum Eagle Proof sets from 1997 had been certified by NGC in Proof 70 condition.
