The 1991 Gold Eagle Proofs were the last in the series to bear the Roman numeral date designations. After 1991, both business strike and Proof Gold Eagles would be adorned with Arabic numeral dates. For this reason, collectors covet the 1991 Gold Eagle Proofs.
As a group, with a total of 224,709 Proof coins minted, the 1991 Gold Eagle Proofs are the smallest issue by total mintage among all the Gold Eagle Proofs bearing Roman numeral dates. After 1991, Proof mintage totals would become smaller over time, and no group would ever again exceed 70,000 total coins minted in any one year. Curiously, with only 50,411 Proof coins minted, the 1991 $50 Gold Eagle Proof was the rarest of the group. This marked the only time that the $25 Gold Eagle Proof would not be the rarest by total mintage.
Additionally, through June 26, 2009, a total of only 401 four coin Gold Eagle Proofs sets from 1991 had been certified by NGC in Proof 70 condition.
