In 1989, the mintage totals for the individual denominations of the Gold Eagle Proofs were significantly less than the mintages for 1988. As a group, the Gold Eagle Proof mintage totals fell by over 75% for the individual denominations compared to the 1988 mintages. Of these, the $25 Gold Eagle Proofs saw the most drastic mintage drop with only 44,798 total Proofs minted. This represented a more than 88% reduction in the prior mint totals for the 1988 $25 Gold Eagle Proof and places the 1989 $25 Gold Eagle Proof in the upper tier of the most rare Proofs in the entire series.
Additionally, through June 26, 2009, a total of only 216 four coin Gold Eagle Proofs sets from 1989 had been certified by NGC in Proof 70 condition.
