The 1988 Gold Eagle Proofs are unique among the Proof series of coins produced from 1986-2008, as this was the first year that all four Gold Eagle denominations were minted in Proof versions. Being the first year for the four coin Proof set, compared to all the other mintages in the first two decades of production, the 1988 Gold Eagle Proofs are among the least rare by denomination with the $5 and $10 Gold Eagle Proofs being the most populous among their denominations in the entire series.
As a group, there was a total of 405,570 Gold Eagle Proofs minted across all four denominations. While this total is smaller than the total mintage of the 1986 $50 Gold Eagle Proofs, it still ranks the 1988 Gold Eagle Proofs as the most populous four-coin group in the entire series.
Additionally, through June 26, 2009, a total of only 420 four coin Gold Eagle Proof sets from 1988 had been certified by NGC in Proof 70 condition.
