The 1987 $50 Gold Eagle Proofs are also unique among the Proof series of coins produced from 1986-2008. In 1987, in addition to the $50 Gold Eagle Proof, the United States Mint also produced the very first $25 Gold Eagle Proof in American history: These were the only two Gold Eagle Proofs minted that year and represented the only year that only these two were minted by themselves. Every year thereafter, the U.S. Mint would produce Gold Eagle Proofs in all four denominations and sizes.
Being the first year the $25 Gold Eagle Proofs were issued, there were a total of 143,398 $25 Gold Eagle Proofs minted in 1987. By total mintage, this makes the 1987 $25 Gold Eagle Proofs by far the most populous and least rare $25 Gold Eagle Proof in the entire series during the first two decades of production. However, it ranks 9th of 22 among NGC Certified Proof 70 populations. There were a total of 147,498 $50 Gold Eagle Proofs minted 1987.
Additionally, through June 26, 2009, a total of only 402 two coin Gold Eagle Proof sets from 1987 had been certified by NGC in Proof 70 condition.
