The 1986 $50 Gold Eagle Proofs are unique among the Proof series of coins produced from 1986-2008. Besides being the very first $50 Gold American Eagle Proofs in Untied States History, in 1986, only the $50 Gold Eagle was produced in a Proof version.
Being the first year issue of the series, more $50 Gold Eagle Proofs were minted in 1986 than any other year since. In 1986, there was a total of 446,290 $50 Gold Eagle Proofs produced and sold. By total mintage, this makes the 1986 $50 Gold Eagle Proofs by far the most populous and least rare Gold Eagle Proof in the entire series during the first two decades of production. In fact the total mintage of the 1986 $50 Gold Eagle Proofs even outpaces the combined total of Gold Eagle Proofs minted within each of the subsequent years since.
Additionally, through June 26, 2009, a total of only 929 $50 Gold Eagle Proofs from 1986 had been certified by NGC in Proof 70 condition.
